What is a limousine? It is a rather broad and unspecific term used to describe an automobile. Usually, it is thought of as an extreme luxury car and its use is commonly associated with the very wealthy. In many ways, it might be thought of more as an idea or concept than an actual product. A man might say to a lady, as he opens the door to his very ordinary automobile, “your limousine awaits, my lady.” He is expressing the idea of a vehicle that has a distinct purpose. In this case, the purpose is the highly romantic transportation of his date to a very special occasion.
The idea of “special occasion” is associated with limousines. They are used to take young girls to their proms and they are used to transport the families behind the hearse carrying the casket of a deceased loved one. Although limousines are often owned by wealthy individuals and used by them as routine transportation, they are hired often hired out to less wealthy people for use in these various special events.
Limousines would commonly be driven by a special driver called a chauffeur. In many cases, the chauffeur would be uniformed. Another characteristic of limousines is that there is usually a distinct separation from the driver’s compartment and the area reserved for passengers. The passenger area is large and often contains amenities such as bars and tables for serving drinks and food.
Some limousines are “stretched” which means they are extremely long with room for even larger number of passengers or even more amenities. Many limousines are actually regular luxury cars that have been modified, or stretched, to add the additional space in the passenger areas. Black or white are the most common colors of limousines, although other more exotic colors have been used.
Regardless of if the owner is a very wealthy individual or a Company, the limousine is a sign of prestige and importance. They are used to transport the rich, the famous, and the important people of the world in style. They can also transport the more average people on special occasions and for specific events. They are the upper class snobs of the automobile world.
